A Dragon for a NeighborKeiin was the first to notice the smoke rising from the forest; being an intelligent person, he could tell that is wasn’t a forest fire. It was too controlled, the smoke rising in a straight column, and it didn’t spread. In fact, it occasionally stopped, leaving gaps in the pillar of darkness that was slowly reaching up into the sky.
Soon enough, the entire village had noticed. Some were screaming, predictably, that the forest was burning; some that a bandit army had made camp and was preparing to raid the village. One man even suggested that the caverns nearby were becoming volcanoes, and that the village would soon be buried in ash and molten rock, but as this was the prediction of the local madman, it was paid no attention.
The village elders quickly selected a small group of villagers to investigate the smoke, including – to his dismay – the young Keiin, who had been trying to slip away unnoticed.
